Revit and BIM: beginner questions

Practical starting points for learning Revit and understanding BIM. These are editorially prepared starter questions, not quotations from customers. Reviewed 27 October 2026.

What is the difference between BIM and Revit?

BIM is a process for creating and managing structured information across a built asset’s life cycle. Revit is one software platform used to support that process. Learning commands is useful, but BIM also involves information requirements, coordination and agreed ways of working.

Autodesk: BIM and Revit explained

Where can I start learning Revit?

Start with a small, measurable object before attempting a whole building. BIMETI’s public Lesson 1 makes a 100 × 30 × 5 mm Generic Model plate, checks its dimensions and saves an editable family. Pause and repeat the exercise in your own practice file.

Watch BIMETI Revit Lesson 1: the plate exercise

Is Revit free for every learner?

No. Access depends on Autodesk’s current licensing terms and your eligibility. Attending an independent training course does not itself qualify you for Autodesk Education access. Check the official eligibility and permitted-use rules before installing or using software for training.

What is a Revit family, and how is it different from a project?

A family defines related building components and their properties. A project combines elements into a larger model. In the beginner exercise, a loadable plate family is saved as an RFA and can then be loaded into a project to place instances. Not every Revit family is a separate loadable RFA.

Which template and units does the plate exercise use?

Use the genuine Metric Generic Model family template for this independent plate. Check that the category is Generic Models and lengths display in millimetres. The exercise does not use a wall-based or face-based template.

Why should I measure the model instead of judging its appearance?

A convincing shape can still have incorrect dimensions. For this exercise, confirm 100 × 30 mm in plan and a 5 mm extrusion depth, then inspect the result in 3D. If a sketch will not finish, check its closed outline for gaps or extra segments.

Why save and reopen the RFA?

Reopening checks that the saved family remains editable. Keep the RFA as the editable master and verify the dimensions and extrusion after reopening. An exchange export does not replace that native master.

BIMETI Lesson 1, 3:52–4:25: save, reopen and verify

Which Revit version should I use with a lesson?

Check the version stated in the lesson before you begin. The audited BIMETI Lesson 1 says its template was verified in Revit 2027.3. Follow its stated setup and keep your practice file separate from production work; compatibility with every other version is not promised.
